Lots of guitar companies offer aged finishes, leave it to Collings to raise the bar and do it right. For one thing there are no scratches and dings and areas where the finish is worn off. Instead, Collings figured out how to produce the kind of light finish checking to the lacquer that you often find on older instruments. This effect, which looks much like a crackle glaze on pottery, is confined to the top, and it adds dimension to the black finish.
This is our favorite version of Collings' "budget" line of Waterloo models. To our ear, the X braced top (the "X" in the model code) delivers far better bass response, and the 14-fret neck gives you the access to upper frets that most contemporary guitarists are used to ( which is really handy if you use a capo!).
