When designing the "Authentic" line of instrument, Martin decided to build instruments as close to the pre-war specifications as possible. Martin refers to these as "virtually hand-built," and indeed they are. These meticulously crafted guitars are made using Adirondack red spruce tops and bracing, T-shape reinforcement bars in the neck, hide glue and more. This particular model, the D-18 Authentic 1939, is a meticulous recreation of a classic model. It has VTS Adirondack spruce top, genuine mahogany back and sides and an ebony fingerboard and bridge. The nut measure 1 11/16’, the standard width from late 1939 on. This is a spectacular sounding guitar and anyone who picks it up has a hard time putting down.
