We've found that most fans of Martin's iconic flattop guitar models from the 1930s fall into one of two camps: The biggest group love the sound but don't really care about historical details they can't hear, and often find the exacting reproductions of those earlier neck shapes a bit of a bother compared to the playability of most modern guitars. The second group want a Martin that's as close as possible, in every detail, to what Martin was building 80 years ago. More often than not a bulky neck shape doesn't bother them simply because playing the guitar comes second compared to talking about it and examining its historical accuracy.
Matt ordered this "best of old and new" D-28 from Martin's Custom Shop along with a VTS Adirondack-topped D-18, and both are winners. Using the current HD-28 as a starting point, he went for the vintage specs where it matters in terms of tone and volume by opting for a Premium grade Adirondack top, given Martin's VTS (torrified) treatment, with Adirondack spruce braces as well. Of course there are numerous "Authentic" versions of the D-28 that look almost identical but which also have "period-correct" side ribbons, bridge saddle, neck heel shape, and other details you can't hear, but this isn't an attempt to satisfy vintage Martin purists. Instead, Matt went for the sound of a pre-WWII D-28 but with the neck shape and other features favored by contemporary players. We love the new Standard Series D-28 and HD-28 models, but when you play this souped-up version we think you'll agree that it's well worth the cost of the extras. And of course if you want an Authentic model we stock those as well.
