We call this Custom Shop Martin the biggest little 00 we've ever heard, and that includes vintage Martins. Matt picked out the wood at the NAMM show in January, but of course Covid got in the way and it didn't arrive at Gryphon until over 9 months later. It's almost a hybrid of a Vintage Series Martin and the company's newer "Modern Deluxe" models, and it has what Matt felt was the best of both modern and vintage features. The top has Martin's VTS treatment, plus 1/4" scalloped bracing and a single finger brace on each side. The back and sides are a set of impressively book-matched cocobolo rosewood that's dense and colorful. As you'd expect from a Martin 00 it has the 24/9" string scale but you'd never guess the shorter scale from the bass response or overall volume. In the looks dept. the fine-pattern herringbone rings the perimeter of the top as well as the soundhole, and the Foden neck inlays are another vintage Martin feature you'd don't see very often. The European maple binding, however is a subtle touch borrowed from the Modern Deluxe models. Gold Schaller "Grand Tune" tuners, another Modern Deluxe feature, do their job so smoothly you won't believe it's a set of open-back gears. A beautiful, and powerful sounding, small guitar and one-of-a-kind.
