George Lowden has been building guitars for so long that most people probably make the mistake of thinking that innovation at the Lowden workshops takes a backseat to consistently building the same iconic Lowden models. But guitar technique keeps changing, and players like Jon Gomm put their Lowden guitars through a more rigorous workout, and as a result when George and Jon got together a different, and stronger, Lowden was the result.
George was one of the first builders to champion Western Red Cedar for the tops of steel string guitars, and a lot of the signature Lowden tone comes from those large guitars with deep sides and a cedar top. But cedar is far more fragile than spruce, and even a quick glance at Gomm's trusty Lowden tells you that guitar top sees far more stress than it was probably intended to withstand. The solution was to put a thin spruce laminate over a thicker layer of cedar, but not in the way "plywood" guitar tops on inexpensive instruments are constructed. Instead, the grain direction of the two layers doesn't vary much, but it still results in the far stronger soundboard that can handle the kind of percussive effects that Gomm incorporates into his arrangements.
The sound that results bears no relation to any laminated-top guitar you've ever played. The sound is huge, with clarity and overtones in abundance, and you don't have to play like Jon Gomm to appreciate the difference.
George Lowden and crew have done an excellent job of sourcing different alternative tonewoods, and building guitars that offer combinations of soundboard and body woods that no other major guitarmakers offer. We have similar 0 body Lowdens to this one but with different woods, offering players a chance to compare and contrast what these different materials lend to the sound of a steel string guitar. This model, with black cherry back and sides and the hybrid top (described above) sounds very different from our other Lowden models that are the same size and body shape.
