The Collings 290 is named for Highway 290, a scenic road that winds past the Collings shop though the Texas Hill Country. The 290 has a solid mahogany body and neck, a rosewood fretboard and lots of sonic attitude, Our Seafoam Green version is fitted with two Lollar Gold Foils, a style of pickup that is fast becoming a house favorite here at Gryphon. The original Gold Foils came on inexpensive American and Japanese guitars in the 1960s, and while those guitars weren't always the best playing instruments, the pickups could sound great.

Ry Cooder mounted a vintage Gold Foil on his modified Strat, now known as the Coodercaster, and made the originals a bit of cult item. The one problem with the original pickups was that the quality was inconsistent and in many cases the tone wasn't all there or they were microphonic. Happily, Jason Lollar worked his magic and developed a modern version of the Gold Foil that has all of the sonic mojo of the old pickups with none of the weirdness. We find that Lollar Gold Foil pickups offers supreme clarity with tons of overtones and a mix of Strat/Tele tones with the depth of a P-90. The Collings/Nash combo makes for a great playing, fine looking, wonderful sounding guitar. Includes a hardshell case.
