The Collings LC models more closely follow the design of the original Gibson semi-hollow body guitars of the late'50s/early'60s because of their laminated construction. But when you hear the term "laminated" it's easy to assume "oh, plywood, then" but Collings isn't using the lamination process to cut corners. Each LC model's top and back is laminated in-house at the Collings workshop in Austin, and the grain direction and thickness of the layers is the result of much research by the late Bill Collings. The laminated maple top, with a "combed" maple center block, works in tandem with the Lollar low-wind Imperial humbuckers to produce the resonance and focus that has made this type of electric guitar legendary for tone and sustain. (Bill's research also resulted in ideal weight and balance) This example is finished in a classic sunburst, with multiple thin coats of nitrocellulose lacquer.
