The Deering Goodtime Blackgrass is an all-black variation of their popular Artisan model. The black stain maple neck and resonator is accented with matte black hardware and a black head. As Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap might ask, “It's like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none. None more black.” The fretboard is made of Midnight Maple, which is produced using a process developed by Greg Deering that injects the color deep into the tight grain of the rock maple. The idea was to create a sustainable domestic alternative to ebony, which is getting scarce. The color in the Midnight Maple fretboard doesn’t wear through to the lighter wood nor does it come off on a player’s hands.
