Charles Waldman makes some of our favorite open-back banjos. This Wood-o-phone sports a wooden tone ring, a type of chamber that increases the volume and projection of the banjo without adding weight or the steely tone that comes from metal tone rings. The rim and neck are made from cherry and the tone ring is blood wood. Note that his shell is deeper than many open-back banjos, which also adds more depth to the tone. Charles Waldman is an excellent craftsman with a great feel for design. From a distance his instruments look very plain but up close his attention to detail is second to none.
