We've long been fans of Paul Newson's mandolins, and while this isn't the first time we've had one of his mandolas we certainly haven't had more than two or three over many years. There's only very light wear from careful playing, and a slight impression in the finish on the back edge from the clamp holding an armrest. Nice gutsy tone, and the usual combination of great wood, and a thin finish over artful coloring, that we've come to expect from Paul. He doesn't build in batches and doesn't have a lot of high-tech tooling, most all of Newson's Instruments are made individually and are primarily made by hand. This is an impressive mandola, especially for the price.
