Nice original "Ball Bearing" tone ring tenor, but reasonably priced because of the repaired headstock. This is the early version of Gibson's newly introduced "Mastertone" line, the first year the iconic hearts & flowers inlay design appeared. Although Style 3 versions were made in great numbers Style 4 and Style 5 don't turn up as often. Note individual "Mastertone" letters in pearl on the headstock, white-black-white rings in the back of the resonator, and the white binding with multiple black-white lines on both the inner and outer rim of the thick 3-ply maple shell (as well as on the resonator, fingerboard, and heelcap). Factory Order Number stamped on the inner wall of the shell matches the number chalked on inside back of the resonator in the usual position. Original finish on both resonator and shell (which has original decal), original finish on neck heel and most of the barrel but finish is missing from much of the headstock where it was repaired. Original tone ring, coordinating rods, two-piece flange, resonator mounting hardware, and hooks and nuts. Presto tailpiece is probably original, armrest is old but probably not original. Neck has been refretted, is straight and plays well. Case included is a TKL Deluxe from the 1980s.
With the additional binding, resonator purfling rings, and hearts & flowers inlay, this would make an impressive conversion to 5-string. Excellent conversion tone rings are available, one of our favorites is made by Steve Huber.
