A great sounding, and playing, F-4 from the highly desirable Lloyd Loar era. It did suffer some significant dcracks to the top years ago but Frank Ford brought it back with a sensitive restoration, probably inspired by the fact that he's owned at least three different oval-hole F model Gibson mandolins starting with an F-2 when he was still in college. The original owner of this F-4, by the way, is shown in the vintage photo glued to the underside of the lid of the case. We don't know anything about him, but the photo shows the same metal tailpiece cover that's still on it now, which bears the initials "S. P. P."

Frank glued and reinforced two long cracks to the soundboard, one just to the left (bass side) of the tailpiece, and another about a half inch to side of that which can be seen running parallel to bass side of the fingerboard (and an inch away from it). Another crack, this one to the side and near the base of the tailpiece, was repaired as well. The back was loose in that same area, probably years ago, and was well repaired. Frank also refretted it, and replaced the ivoroid binding on the fingerboard as parts of the binding were missing and what was still there had lots of cracks. Original tuners, pearl nut, pickguard, and bridge. Tailpiece is probably original but the cover has been chrome plated, so we're assuming that was done when the brass truss rod cover was made and initialed as it's chrome plated as well. Frank French polished the face and the back of the neck, but you can still see the repaired crack to the back of the headstock, at its base, if you look closely. The back of this F-4 has finish checking, the kind we associate with lacquer, so we're assuming the back and sides were given a thin overspray with lacquer years ago. The exterior of the original hardshell case shows wear to the edges but the interior is still in nice shape.
