We don't see 100 years-old Martins very often, especially not in this condition, and the fact it's a Style 45 makes it even more special. This example has the original finish throughout, and its original tuners and bridge. Best of all it has no cracks, and the interior bracing is all original including the bridge plate. The bridge has been reglued (see below) but no other significant repairs have been done. Although Martin was building some steel-string models for Hawaiian playing by this date, a top model like a 00-45 was almost certainly made for gut strings, and with light silk & steel strings it delivers a big full sound. Martin was very busy in 1919, but much of their time was spent building America's new favorite, ukuleles. While the company never made very many 00-45 models per year, production was even lower than average as only 9 were made in 1919.

As you can tell from these photos, the string action on this Martin is higher than "factory standard." Since it is strung with light silk & steel strings, it's quite playable in the lower neck positions, but a serious player will want to have the neck reset. Many Martin guitar fans have a preferred repair person, and while for many Bay Area guitarists that would be Gryphon lots of people in other parts of the country would rather the neck reset be done by someone who has done work on other guitars they own. We're selling this 00-45 as you see it, which gives the next owner the most options including leaving it as it is.

This guitar saw some minor repairs a little over ten years ago, and the receipt for that work is in the case. The bridge was reglued and the original saddle lowered. One bridge pin was missing so a matching dot was added to a very similar old bridge pin from the same era, and the top of the pin reshaped a bit to help it match. The case included is a modern Martin case, but for a 12-fret 000 so it's a bit oversized. There are a number of heavier hardshell case options for the next owner to choose from, which Gryphon would price at a considerable discount.
