Gryphon's Matt Lynch picked out the wood for this Custom when he was in Nazareth. There's Madagascar rosewood, and then there's MADAGASCAR rosewood, if you know what we mean, and this is the nicest set we've seen in a long time on a brand new guitar, dark and dense with a rich reddish-brown color. Matt also chose a beautiful torrefied Sitka spruce top with zero runout, and joined "inside out" the way Martin preferred to put bookmatched spruce together back in the late '20s and '30s (the narrowest grain spacing is on the outside, with the wider grain in the center under the bridge).

This Custom Dreadnought is a reissue of a model Martin never got around to making until the 1950s, and of course by that time wood binding, herringbone rosettes, and pyramid bridges had long been discontinued. So use your imagination, and if you think of what a 14-fret Dreadnought in Style 21 would have looked like in the late 1920s/early '30s, you'll have a pretty good idea of what this Custom D is about. It's features include rosewood binding bordered with wood purfling, i herringbone rosette and backstrip, small Style 21 diamonds in the fingerboard, and "forward-shifted" scalloped X bracing. Old-style open-back Gotoh tuners with "aged" nickel plating complete the subtle look.

Although we love the sound of most Martins with torrefied tops (what Martin calls their "Vintage Tone System," or VTS), we're reluctant to give these "baked" or "cooked" spruce tops all the credit. It's the whole guitar that counts, and this Custom 21 has all the roar and rumble you could hope for in a rosewood Martin D. Whether drowning out the banjo player during a fast flatpicking break or backing up souful vocals, this is a does-it-all dreadnought.
